"As a cancer survivor, I am all too aware of the fine balance between life and death. I am constantly drawn to depict strength within the apparently fragile. My recent work is inspired by the wings of butterflies. For me, they are the marvellous intersection of science, the hand of the Creator, and the fragility of nature. On a microscopic level, they appear as random patterns of coloured tiles without purpose almost like an abstract painting. As a whole they are beautiful disguises that ensure the very survival of each species. I am awed by their complexity.
I like using the square format to emphasize the abstract design. Slight alterations in colour or pattern are made for the sake of composition, but, I try to faithfully map out actual sections of identifiable butterfly wings. The acrylic paintings are textural and painterly to reinforce the abstraction and some mimic the tile like surface of the wings. My hope is that the viewer is struck by the composition before they recognize the source. Smaller images are completed in pen and ink which enable me to recreate more pattern and intricacy. Watercolour gauche is used to portray full scenes. There images focus more on the delicate and fragile nature of the butterfly".
