DAWN MARIE MACSPORRAN
"Growing up I spent a lot of time around tools; my father was a ‘fix everything’ kind of guy. I was always helping him and problem solving became a part of my life. I believe I’ve inherited my talent from both my parents.
And after years of experimenting, I’ve finally found my niche with driftwood! Obsessed with nature’s ‘tossed aside’ medium, I breathe new life into this wood, giving it purpose and refinement. My work gives order to chaos, an abstract pile of meaningless wood, set a side by nature and no longer wanted, I organize it, I make it relevant and important within a whole, I make it into something that can be loved.
My use of this wood as a medium, is “art within art”. Mother Nature’s creations are so precise, so amazing, that I can not solely take the credit for the beauty of my sculptures!
It's my style to try to capture the true essence of animals and creatures. Sometimes I embellish my pieces with shells, feathers or other treasures, adding an unique contemporary twist. My sculptures are constructed with a wide variety of driftwood types. Each piece of wood has been weathered by the waves and sand of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie.
After a beautiful day at the beach collecting my precious medium, it is washed, dried and sprayed with insecticide, then the creative process begins! Each sculpture starts with an armature. Depending on the type and size of the work, metal, or wood. Then I begin by layering and adding driftwood to the piece. I may select areas to burn, adding flecks to the eyes, or special markings to the face. Each piece is then named, signed, and dated. And, as if by magic, the sculpture is perfected and ready for love and adornment".
