CYNTHIA RAND
"To me painting is a combination of fun and frustration. I arm myself with photos ( my own) and bits and pieces from magazines and papers. I rifle through them until an idea seems to emerge and then it is trial and error, and a lot of mess. When something starts to work I tidy so that I can concentrate on one direction. I start with acrylics and water and the base depends on how much 'flow' this idea requires. In fits and starts the process continues and so does the mess and cleanup! Design is often achieved with torn paper and coloured yarn, which can be easily removed, or even left in some cases. I often 'correct' the painting with oil. It is obvious I am no purist. (The watercolour artist impresses me enormously). My results vary between near realistic to near abstract. I like to frame my work, and I make these myself, or buy cheap frames from Goodwill. The latter often requires help from the professional framers! On the whole it is a fun process which is made even more so if someone likes my work enough to admire it or even buy it".
