LAURA KINGSBURY B.Sc
Laura has been painting for over 30 years now and looks forward to showcasing many new originals in this year’s Festival.
A degree in Wildlife Biology and work as a Biologist/Naturalist has provided an excellent background for this wildlife artist. She has developed a strong passion for “birds of all feathers” and continues to express her love and appreciation for the natural world through her sensitive and detailed watercolours.
"I strive to capture the delicate beauty and wonderful expressions of the birds as well as the poetry of a simple background. Light and composition are important in my paintings. The focus of the viewer is drawn to the subject and they come alive on the paper".
Laura was born in Brockville, Ontario, grew up in Ottawa, and now resides near Georgetown, Ontario. Her artistic talent was discovered early as was her intense love of animals and nature. She received many Art Awards in High School but decided to pursue a career in Biology, graduating from the University of Guelph in 1980 with a B.S.c. in Wildlife Biology and Management.
Laura has since worked as a research biologist with the Canadian Wildlife Service and as a Naturalist/interpreter with the National Capital Commission in Ottawa and with several Toronto area Conservation Authorities. She also trained as a Volunteer Guide at the Metro Toronto Zoo.
A self-taught Artist, Laura works mostly in watercolours and more recently in acrylics and soft pastels. She has been painting professional for over 30 years and has become well known for her sensitive portrayals of our native wildlife, especially the songbirds. Her originals and prints are sought by private and corporate collections in many countries, including England, Australia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Germany, Russia, Zambia, Switzerland, and the United States. Two of her Limited Edition prints have been presented by the Canadian Government to the presidents of Zambia and the Russian Federation, Kenneth Kuanda and Boris Yeltsin. She is kept continuously busy with commissions.
Laura’s work is also available through the following co-operative of local Artists and Artisans: Artisans’ Attic - 73 Main Street South in Georgetown, Ontario, The Grotto Artworks Merrickville, Ontario, Main Street Gallery Bayfield, Ontario, and Woody’s Apsley, Ontario.
