ROSEMARIE ARMSTRONG AFC
Rosemarie’s paintings celebrate the ever changing face of the natural world. Solitary, illuminated, peaceful, chaotic….light, drama, movement and emotion, are essential elements of her work. Her goal is to transform an average landscape, to make it exquisite and compelling for the viewer.
Rosemarie works primarily with oil paints using a layering technique; the composition is designed on canvas with basic strokes of pencil which create a starting point for the painting. This is followed by thin washes of oil paint as a groundwork. Then, multiple layers of paint lead to a feeling of depth, this is not an illusion but a deliberate process. Her objective is to translate movement, light and emotion of a landscape or subject onto canvas as she builds the compositional foundation. As the painting progresses, use of increasingly smaller brushes and tools purposefully builds the details necessary to define selected properties and elements. A series of focal points varying in intensity can be discovered when studying Rosemarie’s work. Her technique is solid and her approach disciplined. She consistently studies the works of the greatest Masters of our past and uses the knowledge to guide her compositional plan and colour choices.
She has painted for over forty years and during that time experimented with a broad variety of media. For the past eight years, oil paint on canvas has been her preference. Rosemarie’s formal studies include college art courses as well as part time studies at an Academy of Fine Art in Toronto. However, her best practices have been developed over several decades of work with her mentor, a Chinese Master painter. She consistently studies the works of the greatest Masters of our past, such as W.J.M. Turner and Thomas Moran, using the knowledge to guide her compositional plan and colour pallet.
Rosemarie is a Signature Member of Artists for Conservation (AFC), a group of 500 International Artists who dedicate a portion of their art revenue to benefit conversation causes worldwide. Her paintings are exhibited in four Canadian galleries; images of her artwork have been selected for a University book cover in Finland. Recognitions include Juror’s Choice and Established Artist Awards. A prolific painter, Rosemarie’s paintings and commissioned works can be found in over fifty private collections in Ontario, the United States and Europe.
