"I have been drawing since I was three years-old, but I began to discover my true passion, Portraiture, at around the age of twelve; since then Portraiture has been my genre of choice. I always felt compelled to draw, but there was something about drawing faces with various expressions that I found especially cathartic and spiritual; if I was ever feeling stressed or down this seemed to be an effective remedy for me.
My journey in Portraiture began when I discovered my compulsion to draw characters I liked from movies. I realized I had a knack for capturing the characters I chose, and with each portrait I completed I felt eager to create more. Before I knew it I had a portfolio full of portraits, and I was even getting commissioned by people to create them. I also had the privilege of exhibiting my artwork last summer at Studio 4 Tattoo Parlour on St. Paul St., St. Catharines, which was an enriching experience for me as an artist.
More recently I have turned to painting with acrylics and to capturing a wider range of people in my work. I approach this by altering photos I have taken in an artistic way on my computer (by adding a colour filter, cropping them to emphasize one aspect more than another, etc.), and then rendering the images on canvas with acrylic paint. Painting is a substantially more time-consuming and complicated process than drawing (perhaps needless to say), but I feel that the injection of colour gives the artwork a life that pencil on its own cannot necessarily achieve. The bulk of my work is in pencil and I still love using this medium, but painting has opened up a whole new world of colour that I am excited to be exploring".
