TED, SHERRY AND JENNIFER OOSTERLAKEN
Self-taught concrete artisan Ted gained his knowledge of mix design working with industrial applications for 30 years. In retirement, he used this knowledge to bend the limits and transform concrete into an art form that is both visual and functional. Sherry is gaining knowledge working side by side with Ted and together they blend their different talents into their creations. Their daughter Jennifer has joined the team of Tuscany Concrete by Design concentrating on shows in the Niagara region and she creates the candle holders and coasters. Jennifer is a graphic designer and has always had a flare for art.
"We use images that have been built up to create definition and texture in the concrete. We add natural elements such as leaves, grasses, stone and sand.
Concrete is of course the substance that makes the table and bench tops but it is what happens after the concrete sets that brings each piece to life. By using different types and colours of concrete stains we can create movement, mood and feeling.
Our most common base is live edge cedar which also lends unique character. Wood grain, knots, insect holes are highlighted with wood stain and then coated with urethane for durability".
