TINA CLANCY
Tina works from her home studio in Milton to create abstract paintings in acrylics and mixed media. Her paintings are alive with movement, colour, and expression.
While she enjoys painting large, evanescent and beckoning abstracts, Tina is also intrigued by the idea that matter can express itself, an idea that came to her when she was swept away by an exhibit of an art movement from post-war Japan. These artists were encouraged to celebrate the endurance, beauty, and transcendence of matter, regardless of how rearranged and upended their landscape had become. Encouraged to become playful with medium and process, their art would become more unconventionally creative and expressive in wholly unique ways. Similarly inspired, Tina is constantly employing different techniques and styles in playful and innovative ways to explore and achieve abstraction. Using a version of the technique of “pour painting” with wash and fluid acrylics, or varying the surface texture and wetness before applying the paint are just some of the ways that Tina has kept the painting landscape unpredictable, the experience playful and challenging, and the outcomes unique and engaging. Lately Tina has focused on creating a series of paintings that are defined primarily by restricting each series to the same specific three or four colours. The paintings in each series also share common theme elements; in the Big Sky Series, horizons are kept low, and in the Persian Nights Series, the skies are kept dark and magical.
